Organization of the Collection

The Asian Collection is made up of books, magazines and journals written in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean dealing with the philosophy, religion, social sciences, arts, language, and literature of East Asia. The Collection is divided by language. There are approximately 44,000 Chinese books, 14,500 Japanese books, and 5,000 Korean books.

Books from the Asian Collection may be checked out at the Circulation Desk on Level 3. Asian Reference includes dictionaries, encyclopedias, and other specialized reference works in Asian languages. All the books have call numbers that begin with "Asian Ref." Asian Reference books may be checked out overnight on special loan from the Asian Librarian.

Current and bound issues of magazines and journals are located on shelves near each separate language area. Magazines and journals may not be checked out.

Chinese, Japanese, and Korean newspapers are located in the newspaper racks in the Asian Collection reading area. Back issues are kept for approximately one month.

Asian Collection materials can be looked up on the library online catalog using romanization: Pinyin romanization for Chinese, Modified Hepburn for Japanese, and McCune-Reischauer for Korean.
