Collections
The Government Information Collection includes documents from the governments of the United States, Canada, and Utah. Selected publications are available for many other states. Since 1908, Brigham Young University has been a selective Federal Depository for United States publications, and many documents with older publication dates have been added to the collection. Documents from both the Legislative and Executive branches of government are found in the collection. The State and Municipal Documents Collection has selected publications of social, economic, and demographic data for many areas in the United States. As a depository for Utah State publications, a selective collection of these documents is available. Many current publications are available on Federal, State, and Canadian websites or accessed through the Library's Homepage, "E-reference" link under "Government Documents".
Reference Collection
The Government Information Reference Collection includes catalogs, census records, directories, indexes, statistical abstracts, and yearbooks in print and electronic formats. Call numbers in this collection are preceded with "Doc Ref." Indexes are located on the Document Reference Tables or computer terminals near the Government Information Reference Desk. The CDs are available at the Government Information Reference Desk.
Arrangment of Government Information Collection
United States Government publications are organized in the Superintendent of Documents Classification System (SuDoc). The system arranges documents according to the agency which issued them. In a SuDoc number, the initial letter or group of letters represents the issuing agency. SuDoc publications are organized by agency instead of subject. All publications on a given subject are not together.
State and Municipal Documents are classified in the Library of Congress (LC) Classification System. Canadian documents are arranged in the Canadian Classifications System. Documents are deposited in print, microform and electronic format, including CD-ROM, DVD, videos and Web publications. These items are located in the Government Information Reference area.
Computer Systems
Recent documents which are not in the collection may be available in full-text in the E-Reference section of the Library's Homepage. Consult the Documents Collection Reference Staff for assistance in selection and use. A variety of selected databases are installed on stand alone computers that require compact discs (CDs) to run the program. Computer terminals are provided for access to CD-ROM and Internet resources.
