Recent Acquisitions
Collections
Reference materials are housed in the stacks next to the Humanities
Reference Desk and include guides, directories, encyclopedias, handbooks,
subject bibliographies, and language and subject dictionaries. The Index
Tables have indexes to periodicals on literary criticism, literature,
music, art, performing arts, and film and play reviews. Other indexes include
indexes to anthologies of poetry, plays, short stories, and essays.
The online Library Information Network provides access to the Lee Library
Catalog and also to catalogs of other major research libraries. Periodical
indexes are also found online, under "Resources by Title" or "Resources
by Subject". For a detailed listing of available databases, refer to the
guides entitled "Computer Systems Available at BYU" and "Selected
Indexes and Abstracts".
Additional stand-alone workstations in the Humanities Reference area
provide access to various CD-ROMs, available from the Humanities
Reference Desk.

Linguistics and Language Pedagogy
These materials are housed in the south wing, including such topics
as bilingualism, computational linguistics, and TESL (Teaching English
as A Second Language).

Literature
English, American, foreign, and comparative literatures are located
in the south wing, including the primary works of literary authors, criticism
about the works and authors, and other literary guides.
Literature Catalogs
Short Story and One-Act Play catalogs (located just outside the Humanities
Reference Office) list alphabetically by title, stories and plays published
in anthologies in English and some foreign language literatures. The Fantasy/Science
Fiction Card Catalog, to the right of the reference desk, indexes the books
and anthologies of science fiction/fantasy by author, title, and subject.

Juvenile Literature
Children's and adolescent literature, both fiction and informational
books, are housed in the southwest wing. The more recent collection has
a JUVENILE location code and a Dewey call number. The older collection
is in 808.837. Access to Juvenile books is primarily through BYLINE. However,
the Juvenile Literature Catalog, located on the west wall behind the reference
desk, lists JUVENILE books cataloged prior to 1978. Books in 808.837 are
listed in the main card catalog on Level 3.
Music & Dance
Music scores, journals, books and microfilms are located on level 5.
Most sound recordings are located in the LRC on level 4. Music Special
Collections is also located on level 5 in room 5046.
Music Special Collections and music microfilms are accessible by appointment
with the Music Librarian, David Day (378-6119).
Music Card Catalogs and Card Indexes
(located just north of the Humanities Reference Desk)
Phonodiscs: Vinyl sound recordings received in the Lee Library
up to 1978. These recordings are not cataloged in BYLINE. Approximately
12,000 titles.
Analyzed Recordings: This index provides access to individual
works on sound recordings up to 1978. This information is not available
on BYLINE or in the Phonodiscs catalog (above).
Music Scores/Dewey: Approximately 2,000 scores with Dewey call
numbers. Some of these titles also appear in BYLINE. This collection is
being converted to the Library of Congress classification and decreases
in size on a regular basis.
Song Index: A card file that indexes individual songs found
in collections of songs at the Lee Library. Only selected anthologies are
indexes, it is not comprehensive.
Early Sheet Music Collection Index: Author-title index to a
collection of sheet music (mostly voice with piano) dating from the 19th
to early 20th century. Approximately 16,000 titles.
Bruning Index: Author-title index to a collection of early American
sheet music (mostly voice with piano) dating from the 18th and 19th centuries.
Approximately 14,000 titles.
Dance Reference materials are located on level 5, but the dance
books and journals are on level 1.
Visual Arts
Vought Reproduction Collection
The collection consists of thousands of mounted reproductions of major
art works by famous artists. It is accessed by artist and title of work
(microfiche index), or by subject or country (index on binder ). The indexes
are located at the Humanities Reference Desk.
Another file consisting of about 200 mounted reproductions of famous
art masterpieces is also available at the Humanties Reference Desk.
