Mission:

The Lee Library Learning Resource Center (LRC) exists to maintain and make available to patrons non-print (multimedia) materials and equipment required to use them. Materials collected include compact discs, videos, laser discs, digital video discs (DVD's), and audio cassettes. Electronic equipment is available for patrons to use these materials for classes, scholarly work, and enjoyment. LRC personnel are trained to assist all patrons -- faculty, staff, students, and others -- to help locate materials and use the listening, viewing, and computer equipment to accomplish their educational goals.

Location/Hours:

The LRC is located in the south wing on level 4 of the Harold B. Lee Library.

Services Offered:

Video system:

The LRC has 56 television carrels connected to BYU's Campus Television (cable) system, and to 15 channels within the LRC (VHS, DVD) for scheduled or on demand programming. The LRC also has 21 viewing stations with DVD/VHS decks, from which a patron has control of transport functions (stop, play, rewind, etc.).

Audio listening system:

The LRC has 21 carrels with combination CD/audio cassette playdecks.  Patrons can also listen to CDs in the Campus Cable carrels. This system allows more than one patron to listen to a title but the transport functions are controlled by LRC desk staff.

Viewing rooms:

In the LRC, there are two Technology Enabled Classrooms (TEC), each capable of seating 47 patrons. Each room contains a ceiling-mounted video projector that connects to a TEC podium computer. After logging in using their net id and password, users can access the computer, BYU's Campus Television (cable), a combination VCR and DVD player, connections for an external computer (laptop) and external audio (RCA) and video (BNC) connections. There are also three small viewing rooms, in which up to 5-7 patrons can view video, slide, and other materials in a small group setting.

Open Computer Lab:

This lab is housed in the LRC but serviced by the Office of Information Technology, 422-4000. There are currently 186 lab computers. See also the OIT Open Access Computer Lab page.

Reserve Materials

Faculty may put media materials (their own or the LRC's) on reserve for out-of-class use. Contact the LRC secretary, 422-4581.

Services for students with disabilities:

In cooperation with the personnel at University Accessibility Center (UAC Office) the LRC possesses and makes available for circulation audiocassettes containing textbooks and other materials read onto tape by volunteers. This limited collection can be checked out for a term or semester for UAC cardholders only. The specialized players required for these tapes are also available in the LRC for short-term loan.

Closed-Captioned Television, which displays text at the bottom of the TV picture, is available for hearing-impaired individuals.

Circulation Policies:

The LRC has special loan periods that are not the same as materials checked out from Circulation. LRC materials must be returned to the LRC, not to the Library Security Desk. Teacher's Assistants may check out items for teacher if they have a Proxy Card. Proxy Card applications can be obtained at the LRC Desk and the Circulation Desk.

Videos and DVD's: Our collection of videos is categorized into two groups, Curricular Support and General Use.

Curricular Support. The LRC has over 4,000 titles on DVD and over 8,000 titles on VHS. These materials can be used in the LRC or scheduled by faculty for classroom use or cable distribution by calling 422-4000. Please note that not all titles may be shown over Campus Television (cable) due to licensing restrictions. These items can also be circulated through Faculty Delivery Services by calling 422-5282 or 422-3745.

General Use. The LRC has nearly 1,000 DVD titles and 16,000 VHS titles available to undergraduates for 3-day circulations. These include LDS Church produce videos, General Conference, BYU Devotionals and Forums, CES firesides, feature films, software training, GRE, GMAT, and LSAT reviews. The DVDs in this collection are marked by a DVDC or DVDMM call number.

Compact Discs (CDs): Nearly 2000 CD's that range in content: Books on CD, classical music, Broadway musicals, movie soundtracks, and some contemporary music. Books on CD and Mormon Media may be checked out by undergraduates for three days. Others can be listened to in the LRC.

Audio cassettes: About 8,500 titles on audiocassette including General Conference from 1936 to April 2000. Books on tape, church tapes, and others may be checked out by undergraduates for 3 days. Tapes on reserve for certain classes can be checked out for 24 hours.

Undergraduates may check out up to 3 items, faculty, staff and graduates may check out up to 10 items.
