Mission
The Periodicals Department supports the mission of the Harold B. Lee Library, the University, and its sponsor, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The mission of the Periodicals Department is to support the University curriculum, as well as student and faculty research needs, through the administration of the newspaper and periodical collection of the Harold B. Lee Library. We are committed to collecting, managing, providing access to, and bibliographic instruction for these resources, as well as similar materials available in a variety of formats outside the University.
The Periodicals Department provides reference and other services to BYU faculty, administration, staff and their dependents, BYU students, UALC faculty, staff and students, members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and to members of the local community.
Location / Hours
The Periodicals Department (801-422-3666) is located at the north end of Level 2, of the Harold B. Lee Library.

Periodicals Reference Collection
The Periodicals Reference Collection includes print dictionaries, encyclopedias, handbooks and indexes.
Periodicals Collection
Periodicals are shelved by call number, starting with 'A' call numbers on the south end of the room and ending with 'Z' call numbers at the north end. The 1990 to current holdings are located on the open shelves on the west side (left) of the room. All current issues of these titles are located on the shelf beside the bound volumes. The 1989 and older holdings can be found in the compact shelving on the east side (right) of the room. All journals and magazines are included in the Library Catalog.
Materials included in this collection are designated by a 'PER' location in the Library Catalog.
Newspaper Collection
Daily editions of the Deseret Morning News, New York Times, Provo Daily Herald, Salt Lake Tribune,Wall Street Journal, Washington Post and USA Today are kept behind the Periodicals Reference Desk. Archives of the daily newspapers are kept in the Periodicals locked case. Please ask at the reference desk for assistance. Newspapers may be checked out for two hours; however, they must remain in the Periodicals Reading Room.
Locked Case
Periodicals on CD-ROMs are located in the Periodicals Locked Case and must be requested at the Periodicals Reference Desk.
Electronic Databases
Electronic databases and periodical indexes may be accessed on the computers in the Periodicals Department. A variety of full text journals are available through these indexes, as well as through web sites listed in the BYU Library Catalog. Research assistance in general topics is available at the reference desk or by appointment with the Periodicals Librarian (801-422-3666).
