Goals and principles

The Integrated Digitial Special Collections (INDI) system is designed to facilitate the various tasks associated with processing archival collections. It utilizes powerful project management based software to walk curators, students, interns, volunteers and paraprofessionals through the processing of archival collections. It allows archival administrators to feel confident that archival materials are being processed according to national best practices and standards at the same time that it expedites the processing of collections and allows the archival workflow to be distributed throughout a special collections repository.
INDI is an Open Source project and it will be made publicly available to the archival community as soon as its core elements (INDI Desktop, MyProjects, MyContacts) and modules (Accessioning, Arrangement and Description, and Workflows) are completed.

Where we are

The INDI project team is currently beta testing four of the six core modules. The modules being tested include INDI Desktop, MyProjects, MyContacts, and Accessioning. Planning is basically complete on the Arrangement and Description module and programming will begin mid-September 2007 with an estimated completion date of March 2008. Planning for the Workflows module will begin mid-September and programming for this module will begin as soon as the Arrangement and Description module is complete.

And where we’re going

Once the core elements of INDI are completed the source code will be made available to the archival community. Development will continue on modules for digitization, conservation, microfilming, transcription, and appraisal. These modules will be planned and programmed on a 3-4 month schedule and will be released to the archival community as they are completed.
